How comparisons work

Similar foods have the closest vitamin and mineral patterns and amounts. Complementary foods combine substantial amounts with a different pattern, compared one at a time with your starting food. Neither ranking measures overall food quality or culinary compatibility.

Rankings use a consistent 100 g basis within each food group, not a suggested serving. FDA Daily Values are the default reference; selecting a DRI profile recalculates the rankings. These references are not individualized recommendations.

Results cover only the reviewed foods and shared nutrients, not a complete diet. They exclude fiber, protein, phytonutrients, glycemic response, bioavailability, cost, taste, and allergies. Nutrient relationships do not establish dietary completeness or biological synergy. Individual needs vary; this guide is not medical advice.

Method and sources

Food composition comes from USDA FoodData Central, using one reviewed, fixed FDC ID per food. Beans are cooked without salt; nuts and seeds are plain and unsalted. Variety, storage, and preparation can change actual nutrient amounts.

Charts show raw, uncapped %DV or selected-profile %DRI. The complementary ranking applies f(x) = 1 − exp(−x/20) to reduce domination by very large reference percentages, then uses an unnormalized Gram determinant to measure the area spanned by each pair. This exploratory geometric ranking is not a clinical score, adequacy measure, or dietary recommendation.

Niacin equivalents combine USDA niacin with its documented tryptophan contribution. Vitamin K currently represents USDA phylloquinone (K1). Missing USDA reports are excluded from a category's common nutrient set rather than treated as zero; only nutrients reported for every food in a group are compared.

FDA Daily Values come from the FDA Daily Value reference table. The 20% saturation scale is a provisional FoodMaya model parameter, not a biological or literature-derived threshold.
